The Borough of Highland Park is seeking an experienced part-time Firefighter. Applicants must
be at least 21 years of age and no more than 35 years of age at the announced closing date for
filling applications for this position as set forth in N.J.S.A. 40A:14-12. The maximum age for
applicants that are volunteer members of the Highland Park Fire Department is 40 years as set
forth in N.J.S.A. 40A:14-42. An ideal candidate has advanced knowledge of all state, county, and
local guidelines, policies, and standards.
WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Respond to fire alarms and extinguish fires
- Respond to emergency calls for specialized services such as hazardous materials, confined
spaces rescue, and technical rescue that include high angle, below grade, swift water, trench,
and collapse rescues
- Drive and operate fire apparatus; operate apparatus fire pumps
- Administer emergency medical treatment on an as needed basis
- Complete fire incident reports at the direction of the Fire Supervisor
- Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus according to preventative maintenance schedule
set forth by Fire Supervisor
- Maintain cleanliness of fire station, equipment, and grounds
- Participate in mandatory training and courses
- Acquire and retain knowledge of the Borough, including streets, buildings, water supply
sources, unusual hazards, and other related items
- Other duties as assigned by the Fire Supervisor
REQUIREMENTS:
- Be available to work day (7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday or Friday and Saturday & Sunday)
or night (5:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m., 1 – 3 days/ week) shift
- Four (4) years of experience as a Firefighter, in either a volunteer or paid capacity
- New Jersey Certification Firefighter I (NJ Firefighter II preferred)
- Basic Extrication Certification from a state-approved fire academy
- Valid CPR Certification
- Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations Certifications
- Incident Management Level I Certification
- Apparatus Fire Pump Certification from a state-approved fire academy
- Excellent physical and mental condition, as defined in NFPA 1582 Standards, and ability to
pass a medical examination
- Authorized to work in the United States and be a resident of New Jersey
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Ability to pass a background check
- Has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude
- Possess a valid driver’s license
PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
All additional qualifications will be weighted higher on final score
- Incident Management Level II or III Certification
- CEVO – Fire Apparatus
- State of NJ Division of Fire Safety Certified Firefighter II
- Advanced training in fire suppression, firefighting tactics, and strategy
- New Jersey Department of Health EMT-B Certified
NOTE: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A: 14-45, following is an exception to the 35 year age limit.
40A: 14-45. Service credits and conditions upon appointments to paid or part-paid fire
departments.
In any municipality where an examination is scheduled to determine appointments to the paid or
part-paid fire department and force, any qualified firefighter having served in the volunteer fire
company or force of the municipality for at least 2 years next preceding such appointment shall
be entitled, in addition to his earned rating, to service credits of not less than 3 nor more than 10
points as may be determined by the governing body of the municipality or the authority in charge.
Said appointee shall be over 21 but not more than 40 years old age at the time of appointment.
