Home MenuEvaluating a High Bill
Customers are encouraged to keep an eye on their water usage from quarter to quarter. If you receive a bill that’s higher than usual, please consider the following:
1) What was my usage this quarter last year? There tend to be seasonal variations in how households use water, so in addition to comparing your current usage to the prior quarter, it helps to compare usage from the same quarter of the prior year.
2) Have there been changes in water use? Were there additional guests staying in the home? Were kids home during a school break? Did you increase your frequency of watering your lawn or garden? Did we purchase a pool or hot tub or fill it more frequently?
3) Do I have an undetected leak? A dripping faucet can waste 20+ gallons of water per day. A continuously running toilet can waste 200+ gallons per day and can double a family’s typical water use. Outdoor hoses are another common culprit of leaks. Click here for a how-to on identifying leaks in your home.
If you have explored all of the typical explanations for high water bills listed above or don’t feel that they apply to your situation, you can always contact the Tax Office by calling (732) 819-3788 or emailing mautunnale@hpboro.com to speak to a member of our staff.
The first step will be to re-read the meter to confirm the usage on the bill. If the meter is checked and is found to be accurate, we will advise you to contact a plumber or other professional to help determine the source of a leak.
