Home MenuMeter Replacement Program
Highland Park's water meter replacement program is underway!
Property owners that have not yet had their water meter replaced should contact National Metering Services to book their appointment for a meter replacement as soon as possible. NMS has standard and ‘Sabbath-compliant’ water meters available now. NMS can be reached by phone at 1-888-448-0009.
As of September 30, 2023, the Borough is more than halfway through the replacements at this point and we are targeting completion by the end of the year.
The meter exchange typically takes no longer than 30 minutes. We ask you to please schedule with them as soon as you receive your letter and to provide them full access to the water meter area. This project is a critical component to the Borough’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its aging water infrastructure, to ensure sustainability of the system in the long term.
Sabbath-Observant Meters
While In the process of rolling out this year's water meter replacement program, the Borough learned that the replacement water meters we purchased for this project presented challenges to Sabbath observance for some Jewish residents. The Borough was able to work with our vendor to swap out some of our standard meters for a Sabbath-compliant alternative, but it will take them some time to get them to us. The additional cost for the 'Sabbath-observant' meter is $10/meter, which will be charged to customers that opt-in to this alternative.
While we wait for delivery, the Borough advises residents seeking the 'Sabbath-observant' water meters to refrain from scheduling a visit to their home by our vendor, National Metering Services, until we announce that the 'Sabbath-observant' water meters have been received. If you have any questions, please contact the tax/utility office at 732-819-3788 or taxclerk@hpboro.com.
Payment Plans for Unbilled Water Usage
During the meter exchange process, there can be some instances where there is unbilled water usage found on the meter that did not display on the exterior remote that is read by the utility workers as part of the quarterly billing cycle. Customers are responsible for this usage; however, Borough Council authorized the Tax Collector to offer a payment plan for customers with unbilled usage charges that exceed $750.
